Big St. Germain Lake is one of Wisconsin 's top ten fishing lakes, from boat or through the ice. It offers some of the finest Muskie fishing in the world, as well as trophy Walleye, Northern, Trout, Bass, Crappie, Pan-fish and Perch.

Two national forests are part of Vilas County - The Nicolet and Chequamegon.

The largest state forest in Wisconsin is the 150,000-acre Northern Highland State Forest . It lies west and north of St. Germain. The 40,785.91-acre Vilas County Forest offers 11 walking trail systems totaling 89.7 miles, and 11 boat landings. As a result of its glacial past, Vilas County is centered in one of the world’s most concentrated lake districts aka Northern Highland Lake District. Twelve watersheds flow in the county including the headwaters of the Wisconsin River . The county's landscape ranges from broad, nearly level glacial outwash plains to rough, broken glacial moraines and areas of pitted outwash

The scenery of Big St. Germain Lake and Vilas County is absolutely breathtaking. Nature lovers will enjoy the migrating birds, great blue heron, loons, ravens, turkey and bald eagles.
